Mother

Mother Hamada--supporting character; Mother of Mitsui and Matsuo; wife of Father

Mitsui’s mother thought she was getting a good deal--marry a samurai, have a couple of kids, live the good life, protected by The Daimyo.  It started out well enough but, after Mitsui was born, things started to change.  The first blow was finding out she could not have any more children--and having her husband blame her for it.  Next, despite almost dying during Mitsui’s delivery, he was bitterly disappointed she did not give him another son.  That was the first time she had ever been beaten.  Things only got worse when Matsuo, the only son they had, did not live up to her husband's brutal expectations.  Now realizing she was shackled to a cruel, unloving, abusive, drunken man, she had no choice but to try and pour all her love into the one bright spot in her life: Mitsui.  But even that ray of sunshine was to be taken from her.  With Matsuo banished to a monastery, Mitsui became the new focus for her husband’s anger.  But Mitsui has anger of her own.  And more of Mitsui is lost to her with every day she trains.
